This is a list of SEO terms you should be familiar with if you intend to become a professional webmaster – obviously, there are many more, but it’s a start:
1.301 Redirect
= A way of redirecting the visitors of a website to the location where an extant website has been moved.
2.Analytics
= A program designed to collect and diagnose data about website usage.
3.Anchor text
= The text in a link that gets clicked by the visitor. It is usually recognizable by its colour (dark blue) and a style feature (underline).
4.Bounce rate
= The proportion of visitors that leave a webpage very quickly after the first contact with the content.
5.Conversion
= Visits to a website that fulfill the site’s goals. Clicks, purchases, filling-out of forms, newsletter sign-up, are considered signs of conversion.
6.Cookie
= A small piece of information that works as a reminder for the user when he/she revisits a website they have visited before. The information stored in the cookie gives the user notice of their previous activity while on the given site.
7.Directory
= A website organized in a similar fashion as phone directories. It classifies information according to various headings arranged alphabetically and/or thematically.
8.Feed
= Content that reaches the user by means of a special program, and which is updated frequently. Users subscribe to web feeds, which are often grouped together through the process of aggregation.
9.Gateway page
= Also known as doorway page, it is a web page the purpose of which is to attract search engines and then redirect the users to a different site.
10.Google bomb
= A common practice consisting of generating a large number of links which are not related to the webpage to which they are directed. This is done in order to rank the page higher in hits-per-page tops.
11.Impression
= An individual viewing of a webpage by a visitor.
12.Keyword
= The word entered into a search engine, and which is meant to help visitors find relevant information.
13.Link popularity
= A way of gauging the success of a given webpage by counting the sites that link to it.
14.Mirror site
= An identical site situated at a different web address. Its purpose is to feed the same information through multiple sources.
15.Natural results
= Also known as organic search results, defines online searches that are not paid advertisements.
16.PPC (Pay Per Click)
= An advertising strategy whereby the publisher gets paid every time a link placed by an advertiser is being clicked.
17.Returning visitor
= The type of visitor that comes back to a website after the first contact with that site. A large number of such visitors indicates the success of the site.
18.SEO
= An acronym standing for Search Engine Optimization. It defines the process of achieving high positions in the preferences of search engines, with the aim of making a particular site (or sites) more visible.
19.Unique visitor
= The actual visitor to a website taken independently from his/her visits. Websites are said to be successful when they have a large number of unique visitors (as opposed to a large number of visits, or hits).
20.Web widget
= A small program placed on a website, the purpose of which is to either provide an interactive experience for the visitors or allow the administrator and/or visitors to see online data that is frequently updated.
