Looking from the outside in, some people might think that webmasters have a pretty straightforward job description when in reality they wear many hats. While titles such as webmasters, web developers and web designers may vary in description they frequently crossover into each other’s responsibilities which makes the job of a webmaster one of the most versatile and multi-positional careers you can get into.

Responsibilities of a Webmaster

The following are just some of the general responsibilities of a webmaster, they may apply not to everyone and greatly depends on your employment situation or if you run your own company

Creating website layouts

  • Build or assist in the development of a website
  • Manage websites and perform continual maintenance; this can includes links, database, and other functions
  • Provide web space for individuals and businesses
  • Web programming (knowledge of HTML codes, HTTP, and XML required)
  • Marketing of websites on various platforms including other sites and search engines; determine ad structures, pricing, placement, etc.
  • Administrative work 
  • Site promotion, sending out email, voicemail, newsletters, etc.

Educational Backgrounds

Webmasters of today have all sorts of backgrounds and education levels. If you’re looking to get into a corporate position, you should at least complete a 2 year degree in college or some technical school. Some companies might even require a 4 year degree. But having a degree is not an absolute requirement to becoming a webmaster. Some who have done very well in the profession have only obtained as much as a high school degree or GED. Whether you have a high school diploma, a college degree, or none of the above, obtaining technical training or experience in the field will help you prepare for webmaster responsibilities you’ll encounter when working with companies and individuals who need your services.

A webmaster’s salary technically has no ceiling, especially if they’re self employed or considered free lance consultants. Taking on as many jobs as you can in a period of time and setting your price for different types of jobs allows you to determine your income. But for those who work for companies and corporate industries, there is a limit as to how much you can make in a month or year.
