1. Keep it Relevant
Remember when SEOs thought it was a good idea to stuff a page full of keyword strings, over and over again – the argument being that Google spiders used those keyword strings as indicators of a page’s relevance? Well, that obviously doesn’t work anymore…what were we thinking, right?
Well, we were half-way there anyways. While those types of tactics will hurt rankings, it is true that Google awards relevance. So what’s the best way to show relevance in a Post-Panda world?
Be relevant, of course! It’s really quite simple. If you want Google to send some love, talk about your article’s topic in an educated, relevant manner. Use relevant terminology. Say relevant things. Talk about relevant current events.
Don’t fill articles with fluff and tangents just to fill space. .
And if you’re going to link, keep your links relevant too.
2. Keep it Classy
Speaking of links, a huge issue these days, Post-Panda and Post-Penguin, is your links – more so with the latter than the former, of course. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what you can get away with now and what you can’t – these arguments are common among SEOs, who like to point out this and that site that’s still ranking well regardless of doing such and such.
That’s all fine and dandy, but the best advice you can follow if you’re in business for the long run is to keep it classy. That means stop trying to game the search engines. Your tactic might slip under the radar now, but what about tomorrow? What about next year?
3. Keep it Clean
Another important factor since Panda came along is a clean, simple site structure that welcomes Google (and readers) with open arms. Nice and tidy URLs. Internal linking. Try not to force your audience down a certain “path” or create dead-ends – they should have options and a clear-cut view of the options on your site.
Think user-friendly and you ought to get it just about right.
