Just to preface this article, I want you to know that I know very little about HootSuite (please… no “hiding under a rock” jokes), although that will most likely change by the time you read this. I’m just too curious to stay away.

But, I already have a slew of “income producing activities” that I do each day. I’ll slowly add “proper social” into the mix eventually.

I visited the HootSuite homepage briefly the other day and it seems to me to be a social profile management tool. I didn’t have the time or desire to dig deeper. Since my visit I’m now getting retargeted all over Facebook, and one of the ads states: “Schedule Tweets and Manage up to 100 Social Accounts.” It costs less than $10 each month so I may eventually try it, but the truth is I’m not really that into the “social” thing that much right now. I’m just not that excited about it to get involved to the caliber suggested by most people.


But I also know that it is inevitable, and I am half in it. I hire people to handle most aspects of it for me though but I know I can save money doing it myself. Ugh, I’ll get there.

A Script for Setting up Dates and Times for Use in an Import Spreadsheet for HoostSuite

At any rate, a friend asked me to setup a quick script for him to allow him to generate a list of dates and times to copy into a spreadsheet. Apparently the spreadhseet can be imported into HootSuite to schedule Tweets. The first column contains the dates and times.

He wanted to be able to just enter a start date and an end date and have it create a list of all the dates and times in between.

It’s easy to “add” 1 to a date. The challenge was that each date had several times too.

It seems strange to me that someone might Tweet at the exact same 7 times each day but hey, I was up for the challenge.

Well, it was late and I wanted to do it quickly so I used some Excel commands instead of creating a PHP script. It seemed to me that that would be the easiest route for me, still does in fact. You can watch in the video how I did it and I’m sure that you’ll find that it’s very simple to duplicate.

Once you get it setup, all you need to do is enter a start date at the top in “A1.” The rest of the cells will fill automatically. Since you need to use a .csv (comma separated values) file for the import to HootSuite you can just copy the values into a new spreadsheet that you will then save as .csv. In the video I just end up doing a “save as” to create the CSV file. From there you will be prompted that you may lose something… it’s just referring to the formulas. That’s OK because we just want the values for the import file anyways.
